Day 30 : Life Always Brings You Full Circle

It was always going to be a special day today. After 29 days of intense cooking, healing and connecting in Bali, today marked my 30th and last day in school.

I walked to school early in the morning so that I could catch one last praying session with Angga. As though knowing it was my last time walking through the village, the neighborhood dogs who had traumatized me on my first evening in school came out in full force, five of them looking at me and howling like they had seen a ghost. Except that this ghost no longer cowered in fear but continued to walk past them. “I see you, dogs! Now you can go!” As if on cue, they lost their interest in scaring me, and scurried off.

Morning Circle was especially emotional today. I shared about how I felt everything comes a full circle—how uncanny that the dogs would gang up on me on my first and last day and how I now react differently, half tearing, half laughing at my own transformation. How uncanny that Drew, a fellow intern, was here on my first day and now back in school on my last day as well after her own healing journey—how much both of us had grown. Everything seemed to come back full circle.

Made stroked me on my thigh as she always does when I needed comforting. Drew made an emotional and tearful observation of the transformation she had witnessed in me.

Perhaps Teresa made the most poignant reflection as she recalled our first moment of interaction when I asked her how a cardamom taste like and she went, “Like this, Karen.” – and proceeded to give me a big, huge, warm teddy bear hug. “This is exactly how it felt like being with you. Thank you for allowing others to just be themselves.”

There was a positive vibe in the air amidst the tears and laughter we shared. It was raw, emotional, beautiful and inspiring all at once. It felt like I had witnessed my own funeral but without any sadness, just pure joy and contentment. We closed the circle with a silent meditation, with the group sending me love for my continued journey of transformation. Oh, and I finally got the famous Cinnamon Roll!

Life always brings you full circle to the same place just to show you how much you have grown.
