Day 29 : Serendipity – The Occurrence Of Beautiful Events By Chance
I have always believed in serendipity, the occurrence of something beautiful or good by chance. Maybe because it was my last full day in Bali, somehow everything would end up serendipitous.
As most ‘efficient’ Singaporeans do, I had planned a detailed itinerary of the day’s events. We would head over to Ubud to find Vanessa, do a relaxing waterflow healing session at her pool, catch up over lunch, go to the ashram, get a spa massage and then return to Tabanan by 5pm so that Teresa can have a good rest before another long-haul trip the next day.
To which Teresa took one glance at my itinerary and simply deadpanned, “We will leave school around 9.30am.” The end.
As luck, or serendipity would have it, my period came, and I was forced to sit out the waterflow healing session. Which was all good, considering I got to rest under the shade and not aggravate my wounds. After the session, we set out for lunch and then spontaneously decided to go on a crazy chocolate-rich dessert feast. By the time we finished stuffing our faces, it was already nearing 5pm. Based on our plan, we should have dropped Vanessa off at her homestay and left for Tabanan after that. But no—we couldn’t bear to leave her alone, so we decided to send her to the ashram, then leave. But not before we chanced upon a drum factory and bought some instruments on route, and not before we chanced upon the gigantic wordings “TRIO SISTERS” atop a shop roof just as we were crazily belting out the song ‘We Are Family’ by Sister Sledge. Serendipitous!
Based on our plan, we would drop Vanessa off at the ashram, then leave. But no—we arrived at the ashram, for the first time seeing it in daylight and decided it would have been foolish not to explore it since we were already here. We walked around the compound and guess who we chanced upon? It was the guru, this time round the girls finally got to see him! And guess who I chanced upon after that? It was Jaya the beautiful ashram dog whom I had fallen for on my very first visit!
The whole chain of events was, quite simply, serendipity in its most wonderful form! If we had followed my man-made plan, we might have missed out on all these!
We reached home at 9.30pm, way past our original schedule. Sure, it was tiring, but I’m equally sure none of us would have it any other way.
